Julie Benz likes role on ABC series ‘No Ordinary Family,’ but low ratings threaten show next season

Make sure you watch an all “No Ordinary Family” TONIGHT!! Come on guys, let’s get the ratings up and get it renewed!!!

“No Ordinary Family” star Julie Benz knows when a scene isn’t going exactly how she’d like – she can feel it.

“When things aren’t working, it feels very muscular,” she says. “I feel like I’m trying to create something.”

Benz is hoping she doesn’t have that feeling this week as she and the rest of the cast and crew finish production on the ABC series’ season-ending episode.

“It’s a great season finale,” Benz says. “It’s a real cliffhanger.”

Whether viewers will be able to see the resolution of the cliffhanger is a question that will linger for another month or so.

“No Ordinary Family,” which airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m., stars Benz and Michael Chiklis as the parents of a family that has unusual powers. The show is a mix of action, sci-fi and family drama. However, it has not been a Nielsen winner, leading to speculation that it won’t be around next fall.

“I think we created a great show,” she says. “We’re on a very tough night and we’re up against three monsters [“American Idol,” “The Biggest Loser” and “NCIS”].”

Still, Benz knows well there’s so much out of her control – and the control of those on the show – that will affect whether the show is back in the fall or not. She’s been at this dance before, having starred on shows that didn’t make it a season. She was also abruptly killed off of “Dexter,” too, leaving her without a job.

“I can’t make the decisions happen,” she says. “I just try to be very Zen about it.”

She’s come to terms with the fact that acting is a business that tends to lead to periods of employment followed by unemployment.

“I always believe there will be another one,” she says. “And if there’s not? There’s always that fear. I’ve been making a living as an actor, sometimes a great living, sometimes not so good. If you want job security, don’t be an actor.”

Despite the uncertainty about the future of “No Ordinary Family,” Benz says the experience has been good, in part, because she gets to do some of her own stunts – well, all but those requiring water.

“I can’t swim,” she says. “I get very claustrophobic in water. I’m scrappy, if a boat goes down I’m going to save my ass. I like to lay next to the pool, not be in it.”

Before breaking into Hollywood, Benz spent time in New York attending New York University.

“Everything I learned about acting I learned at NYU,” she says. “When people find out you went to school on the East Coast, it makes you cooler.”

When she was a little girl, she could never decide what she would be when she grew up, but was drawn to acting because she likes to play other people. Now she does that on a daily basis.

And, just like she knows when something isn’t right with acting, she knows when it does work.

“I can tell when something works,” she says. “It’s a physical feeling I have. If I’m doing a scene and everything’s magically working, a sense of realization comes over my body, there’s a warmth, it’s like, aahhhhhh.”

My grandkids and I really have enjoyed the show and dvr it every week!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep it for next fall !! It’s one of the few decent shows I’m not afraid for my grandkids to watch and don’t have a lot of explaining on why something isn’t appropriate….well except when Kate and Joshua lost her virginity and she got pregnant while unmarried…..that’s not a good example. But for the most part it’s very cool and entertaining! Keep up the gr8 work!!!
